Ernst & Young

The lower ground floor atrium and main entrance to Ernst & Young’s new London head office building consisted of 850m2 of flamed black granite. After laying, the floor was left unsealed and as a result, maintenance problems were soon encountered.

The building was designed by Foster and Partners and built as a joint venture by Mace and McAlpine. The lower ground atrium is used as a coffee bar and reception area, and it was here in particular where the floor had become badly stained.

Extensive was asked to advise on appropriate treatments to completely restore the floor. We carried out a series of small-scale tests to demonstrate alternative cleaning and sealing treatments, so that the best solution could be achieved. We also discussed and advised on the maintenance implications of the various options.

Once the test programme was complete and the solution agreed upon, we were contracted by McAlpine to carry out the stain removal and cleaning, and to impregnate the floor with a sealer.

Having completed the remedial work we drew up a site specific maintenance programme and assisted the regular maintenance contractors by training their staff in the new routines.

The appearance of the floor is now greatly improved, and by following the agreed maintenance schedule and using the products we specified, this improvement has been maintained.
